How to make a charitable distribution from an IRA

Updated yesterday

Individuals age 70½ or older may make Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) directly from an IRA to an eligible charitable organization, up to a maximum of $108,000 per year per individual.

How to Request a QCD

To initiate a QCD, submit the IRA Distribution Form available in the Form Center. Please note the following instructions:

  • The IRA Distribution Form must be notarized.

  • In the Delivery Instructions section, select Alternate Payee or Alternate Address and enter the organization’s information.

  • In the Special Payment Instructions section, include the wording “Donation to” followed by the name of the organization as well as their QCD status.

    • Example: Donation to ABC Charity registered 501(c)(3)

The total amount of QCDs made during the year will be reported on Form 1099-R.

Consult with a qualified tax advisor for guidance on reporting the distribution properly when filing taxes.
