What are the processing times for ACH and wire transfers, including deposits, withdrawals, and verification?

Knowing ACH and wire transfer timelines helps manage a Firstrade account effectively. This article outlines deposit and withdrawal schedules, fund access, verification steps, and frequently asked questions.

Overview of ACH and Wire Transfers

ACH (Automated Clearing House) and wire transfers are the two primary methods for transferring funds to and from a Firstrade account. ACH transfers are used for transactions with U.S. bank accounts and generally take longer to process, while wire transfers are faster and suitable for both domestic and international transactions.

Bank Profile: Before initiating ACH transfers, a bank account must be linked through the Bank Profile section. For instructions on setting up a bank account profile, see How do I link a bank account for ACH transfer?

Timelines for Deposits and Withdrawals

ACH Deposits

  • Processing Time: ACH deposits typically take 1–3 business days to process, with full settlement occurring within 5 business days.

  • Fund Availability: For initial ACH deposits, up to $1,000 of instant buying power may be provided before full settlement. Subsequent deposits may be available immediately up to the account's existing asset value.

ACH Withdrawals

  • Processing Time: ACH withdrawals typically take 1–2 business days to arrive in a designated bank account after processing. Requests submitted before 1:00 PM ET are processed the same day.

  • Holding Period: Recently deposited funds may be subject to a 30-day holding period before they are eligible for withdrawal.

Wire Transfers

  • Deposits: For timely processing, the wire instructions should include the account holder's name and Firstrade account number in the "For Final Credit To" or notes section of the wire. Wire deposits that include this information are generally credited to the Firstrade account the same or next business day. International wire deposits are typically credited within 1–3 business days.

  • Withdrawals: Wire withdrawal requests submitted before 12:00 PM ET are generally credited to the recipient bank the same business day. Requests submitted after 12:00 PM ET will be processed the following business day.

Verification and Document Submission

  1. Document Submission for Verification: If verification is required for ACH withdrawals, the following documents may be requested:

    1. A government-issued photo ID (such as a passport or driver's license, including signature page)

    2. An official bank statement showing the account holder's name, address, and bank account information

Documents can be uploaded after logging in to the account by navigating to Service > Form Center > Upload Document and selecting "Funds Transfer Verification" as the file type.

Frequently asked questions

  • Why is a pending ACH transfer blocking a new transfer? ACH transfers must be completed before a new transfer can be initiated. If a pending transfer is in progress, it must fully process before another transfer can be submitted.

  • How can the status of an ACH transfer be monitored? ACH transfer statuses typically update from "Processing" to "Complete" by the next business morning after processing. Funds are generally received within 2–3 business days after processing. In some cases, the status may display as "Action Required," indicating that additional documents or information are needed.

  • What causes ACH withdrawal delays? Delays in ACH withdrawals can occur due to verification requirements or bank processing times. Submitting all required documents promptly can help avoid delays.
