What are the order limits for stocks and options?

To help ensure fair and orderly trading, the following limits and requirements apply when placing stock and options orders.

Order Size Limits and Requirements

Stock Orders

  • The maximum order size for buying or selling stock is 100,000 shares per order.

Options Orders

  • Maximum opening order: 1,000 contracts per order

  • Maximum open contracts per underlying symbol: 2,000 contracts across all positions

Order Type Requirements

  • Opening option orders exceeding 50 contracts must be placed as Limit Orders.

  • All option trades during extended trading hours must be entered as Limit Orders.

Same-Day Expiring Options

  • Same-day expiring option orders cannot be placed or edited within one hour of market close.

  • All unexecuted same-day expiring opening orders (including Day Orders and GT90 Orders) will be automatically canceled at 3:25 PM ET.
